About The Bench

The Bench is a specialist construction product evidence consultancy — created to help construction teams understand what technical evidence actually supports, and where further clarification is needed.
Construction product decisions are rarely simple. A project question may involve product data sheets, test reports, classification reports, certificates, drawings, fire strategies, site constraints and comparison products. The Bench sits between the question and the evidence.

Construction has no shortage of information. The difficult part is understanding what that evidence actually supports. This short film sets out what The Bench does and how it thinks — before the detail that follows.
What is being claimed. What evidence exists. Whether it applies. Where its limits sit. What can reasonably be concluded.
Why The Bench exists
The construction industry is moving towards higher expectations around evidence, traceability, competence and project-specific accountability.
At the same time, many technical queries still arrive in a messy format: a drawing, a product name, a short email, a Building Control comment, a test report, a certificate or a request to "confirm suitability".
The problem is that the evidence may not answer the exact question being asked. The Bench exists to bring structure to that moment.
We help turn unclear technical enquiries into organised evidence reviews, gap checks, written responses and decision records.
What we do
The Bench provides evidence-led technical review for construction product and project-specific questions.
We review documents such as product data sheets, test reports, classification reports, certificates and Agréments, technical drawings, fire strategy extracts, product comparison information and installation or build-up details.
We then help explain what the evidence appears to support, what it does not clearly support, whether the project detail matches the evidence basis, what assumptions or limitations should be made visible, and what further information may be needed.
What we do not do
The Bench provides evidence review and written technical guidance. Any required design sign-off, engineering judgement, statutory acceptance, Building Control decision or dutyholder approval remains with the appointed competent person or organisation for the project.
Our role is to review available evidence and provide clear written technical guidance to support better-informed discussions and decisions.
Relevant project roles may include the client or project dutyholder, Principal Designer, Principal Contractor, Responsible Person, fire engineer, structural engineer, Registered Building Control Approver or other appointed approving authority.

We are often useful when a project team has evidence but is unsure whether that evidence is enough for the actual question being asked.

Our approach is structured around the evidence. We start with the question, then review the available information against that question. We separate what is directly supported from what is assumed, unclear or outside the evidence provided.
This helps avoid overclaiming and makes the limits of the evidence easier to see.
The result may be a short technical view, a written response, an evidence map, a gap note, a product comparison or a more detailed review report.
Every enquiry follows the same structured route in: the question and the evidence are captured first, the review runs against that fixed question, and the output is checked before it goes to you in writing. It does not replace professional judgement, statutory approval, design responsibility or project dutyholders.
