Cavity vs no cavity?
External Wall Design in a Changing UK Climate
The industry argues about cavities in absolutes — always required, or never needed. So The Bench reframed the question and put it to the evidence:
Under what conditions can cavity, partially cavity-based and cavity-free external wall systems provide safe, durable and resilient performance — and what evidence is required to demonstrate it over the intended service life?
The result is a completed 43-page evidence review, set up so it could have concluded for cavities, against them, for hybrids, or that the evidence is insufficient. No conclusion was pre-approved — calibrated conclusions throughout, and INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE recorded honestly where the evidence runs out.

The Fire Rating Is Only the Start
R120 tells you a fire-resistance period. It does not tell you the whole evidence position. The applicable evidence also depends on the member, system build-up, environmental exposure, application and lifecycle conditions.
